On a whim, called a local Panerai boutique. Inquired of the 422 expecting to be laughed at. They had one, their first. I bought it. I'm freaking out right now. Great boutique experience. Details and pics will follow.

Here it is. VERY low serial # tells me it's one of the very first batch produced. Dial is a lot less busy and the watch heavier than my 88 for sure (which, by the way is for sale to a good home). The OP boutique swapped the strap (26/22) for an XL and is mailing me an XL in the OEM rubber. Not sure how this watch will look with a rubber strap but we will see. I could not get them to throw in an extra strap which was dissapointing but i understand that it's a very hard to get piece so they have no reason to sweeten the deal. I will post a review when I have some free time.

Thank you all. I'm pretty stoked. Initial impressions are it's big. Not heavy on the wrist, but big. You sorta have to be careful not to bang it into doors, tables. I have an 8" wrist. It also sits higher on the wrist and the domed crystal is raised above the bezel. On my 88 the flat crystal sat flush with the top of the bezel. It has a built in faux patina which makes the numerals a bit darker but the gold hands really pop out. Strangely, even with the cream colored patina it still glows bright blue. The strap it came with is pretty nice but I'm not too sure about the rubber one. I will have to explore other strap options in time.
I love the brown and black gator/croc look. The watch winds very smoothly and seems to be keeping good time. The seconds reset feature is cool.

My overall impresssion at this point is that it has a much more true vintage look to it and that is the major difference for me. The 88 was bold bright and busy. The 422 can best be described as having a soft glow to it due to the sandwich dial and the domed crystal. I understand now why lovers of the 372 for example describe how the light interacts with the plexi to give the watch a warm look to it. That's the best way I can describe it. It's big in size at 47mm but not blingy in any way whatsoever. I think folks who don't know PAM will wonder what the hell it is, folks who do will appreciate the total package and it's homage to its historic roots, and as for me I feel lucky to have it and hope that my choice proves wise.

It's really big, but it doesn't look big on your wrist.
