A few weeks ago, I noticed that the movement and dial in my Tudor Date-Day Jumbo would move slightly when I unscrewed the crown. I contacted Archer about it and he said the most likely cause was that the clamps that hold the movement in place must have loosened up some. He would have fixed it under warranty, but I didn't want to pay for shipping for a simple fix.

Today, I stopped by one of the local ADs (William's Jewelers) and talked with Bruce Williams who founded that business in 1973. He saw that Tudor as I was checking it in with one of his staff and overheard me asking if they had heard anything about Tudor coming back to the US. That opened the door to a nice conversation with Bruce that began with him saying "I remember when we still sold those in the 70s". He was intrigued by Eugene's custom end links too - thought they looked very nice and almost like a factory option.

He said he hadn't heard any rumblings of Tudor coming back, but wouldn't rule it out. He said it was his opinion that Rolex was not doing this for fear of diluting their brand value in the US with a lower cost option. Bruce personally felt it would mean more competition for the likes of Tag and Omega, but not really for Rolex as they are different price point brands. He also heard that ETA movements were already in short supply and opening up the US market to Tudor could strain the supply further.

We also talked about AD's losing the right to carry Rolex and Rolex Boutiques. He said that the Boutiques are privately owned and not owned by Rolex, so as not to compete against their distributors. The Boutique in the Wynn in Vegas is owned by the Wynn and the one that just opened in Chicago is owned by Tourneau. As for ADs losing their rights to carry Rolex, he said it seems to be a combination of things - sales volume, offering deep discounts, and representation of the brand (e.g., condition of the store, knowledge of the product, prominence of display compared to other brands carried, etc.).

We got back on vintage watches when finalizing the paperwork on my watch. He said his brother has a collection of about 40 including a red sub and Newman Daytona. I didn't have one of the TKF business cards on me, but will take one when I go pick up the watch.

BTW - what does a Rolex AD wear when he can own any of them? Today, it was a SS/PT Yachtmaster. I'll look again when I pick up my Tudor.

As I have posted previously, the introduction of today's now well accepted wrist watch among 'gentlemen' was a long and arduous process. This reluctance was caused by a number of reasons ranging from 'effeminate, ruggedness, and possible ease of use.
Remembering if you asked 100 people if the minded change over 80% would respond "No, as long as it does not effect me."

This reluctance was not helped by the jewelers of the time, who for very different reasons did not advocate the wristwatch! We saw that here as late as 1916:

We know, Gruen made many early (1916 to 1919) adverts promoting their men's wristwatches like here.

Hence, I was so amazed to be given this document from our head librarian, found in the Waltham archives - 'Manly Watches for Manly Men' - and they really come out fighting, with statements like:

Quote

"Many man so out-of-date as to consider the wrist watch effeminate need only learn the kind of men who use a Waltham (note use NOT wear).
They are the 'fighting' men - the soldiers in the World War, the military and naval men the world over, the big game hunters, the aviators, the sportsmen, motorist, yachtsmen , the college man (?really?)
Strong, virile, two-fisted men wear the Waltham (now it is wear not use) wrist watch, because in every detail of appearance it looks the part of a mans watch, and because it is convenient to use and safe to trust"

UNquote.
Fighting talk. Political correctness? I don't think so.

Read on:

FANTASTIC, wonderful writing - really!

I had to go to Tourneau on my lunch to place an order for something I already bought but lost :banghead: .
While there, I wanted to see this weird quartz looking watch that they had displayed in the window. It certainly wasn't my cup of tea at all but it was interesting looking. I figured it would be a few hundred dollars.

Well... it wasn't.
It was 19500 dollars.! :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I am very open minded when it comes to watch pricing but 20 grand for a non mechanical just seems nuts to me.

Anyway, the watch was a Devon.

While certainly an interesting watch, it isn't for me. Even if I had the 20k laying around.

The Devon Works Tread 1 Watch is a watch like none other. It represents cutting-edge futurism in design, in production and functionality, a watch already weaving a story of its very own. The Devon Works Tread 1 features four internal 2-micron thin belts that rotate through this timepiece’s mechanics with an exact precision. They’re each monitored by an optical recognition system to keep them in tune, with motors powered by a lithium polymer rechargeable cell. Now for the groundbreaking part– that battery is charged via wireless induction, a bold step forward for watch power technology.

The design of the Devon Works Treat 1 Watch appears to share inspiration with a motion picture film camera of the last century. The thin belts that slide through this watch’s mechanics recall the same sensation as film flying through a camera at 32 frames per second. The association is fitting, as the Devon Works Treat 1 was designed and constructed in California– not by a motion picture producer, but an aerospace company. The result is a bold, progressive and bulletproof watch with a groundbreaking style of movement in a one-of-a-kind design

Al Qa'eeda To Go On Strike.

Muslim suicide bombers in Britain are set to begin a three-day strike next Monday in a dispute over
the number of virgins they are entitled to in the afterlife. Emergency talks with Al Qaeda have so far
failed to produce an agreement.

The unrest began last Tuesday when Al Qaeda announced that the number of virgins a suicide bomber
would receive after his death will be cut by 25% this April from 72 to only 60. The rationale for the cut
was the increase in recent years of the number of suicide bombings and a subsequent shortage of virgins
in the afterlife.

The suicide bombers' union, the British Organization of Occupational Martyrs (or B.O.O.M.) responded
with a statement that this was unacceptable to its members and immediately balloted for strike action.
General Secretary Abdullah Amir told the press,
"Our members are literally working themselves to death in the cause of Jihad.
We don't ask for much in return but to be treated like this is like a kick in the teeth".

Speaking from his shed in Tipton in the West Midlands in which he currently resides, an Al Qaeda chief
executive explained,

"We sympathize with our workers' concerns but Al Qaeda is simply not in a position to meet their demands. They are simply not accepting the realities of modern-day Jihad in a competitive marketplace.
Thanks to Western depravity, there is now a chronic shortage of virgins in the afterlife.
It's a straight choice between reducing expenditure and laying people off.
I don't like cutting wages but I'd hate to have to tell 3000 of my staff that they won't be able to blow
themselves up."

Spokespersons for the union in Newcastle , Middlesbrough, Essex, Glasgow and Australia stated that
they would be unaffected as there are no virgins in these areas anyway.

Apparently the drop in the number of suicide bombings has been largely put down to the emergence
of the Scottish singing star, Susan Boyle.
Now that Muslims know what a virgin looks like, they are not so keen on going to paradise.

OUT WITH OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW ARRIVAlS!!!

SUPER COOL, SUPER STYLISH - WATCH STRAPS - HANDCRAFTED SHELL CORDOVAN 2 PIECE & HANDCRAFTED VINTAGE LEATHER 2 PIECE

Can’t find those stylish watch straps that you have been looking for to compliment your timepieces? You know the ones!!! those that we have all been seeing on those oh so stylish Italian wrists for so long.!!!
Quality timepieces require quality straps and these vintage leather and horween shell cordovan are not only super quality, but super stylish and handcrafted in Spain, Germany and the US.

Its not like I haven't got enough to do, with Oyster prices going through the roof, low key being the name of the game and of course, having a bit of fun like those Panerai chaps, but hey, I had to share them with you!!!

Further pictures, details, pricing etc. on my website...which I won’t plug here...Google it or email me if you don’t know.

Please confirm stock availability by email - [email] jedly1@gmail.com [email]

We aim to ship first business day after order. Strict, first come first served basis.
Signed for takes about 4 days to Asia and a week to USA and UK.

The two-piece straps take a 16mm buckle and due to popular demand we now ship WITH a generic buckle.

These two piece leather straps are handcrafted in USA and Germany using the best leathers, some reclaimed vintage leather and some new which is taken through the traditional tanning process to give you a vintage feel. All of the 2 piece leathers are vegetable tanned - this is a method of tanning that is seldom used anymore and is the way that leather was tanned 50 plus years ago. Tanning leather this way makes for a much better looking, longer lasting, vintage feeling, looking leather.
This is the major difference between vegetable tanned leather and modern chrome tanned leather, of which 99% of the leather straps sold are today. You can have leather that is tanned overnight, but it will never look or feel the same as vegetable tanned leather that takes 9 months!!! I know what I prefer!!!

Handcrafted Vintage Leather 2 piece straps - US$99 plus $12postage. Available in– Light Tan, Charcoal, Grey Leather, Caramel, Chocolate Brown, Espresso, Light Brown Suede, Mid-Brown Leather, Charcoal Suede, Light Tan Suede, Red Tan–20mm
This is considered the finest leather in the world. It is found in only the best quality shoe manufactures and leather accessories of the highest quality. It is only treated in one place in the world and stamped with their unique brand. Every hide is treated in special oils and waxes for 7-9 months and must pass tough quality control measures before release.
After wearing your strap, it quickly becomes as soft as butter and NO STRAP will wear as well or as long as the Horween Shell Cordovan. It is virtually waterproof and the more you wear it, the better it becomes.

Historical tidbits you didn't know you needed to know!

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras.
One's image was either sculpted or painted. *Some paintings of
George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with
one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and
both arms. *Prices charged by painters were not based on how
many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were
to be painted. *Arms and legs are "limbs,"
therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. *Hence the
_expression, "Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg."

************************************************** ************
As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only
twice a year (May and October)! *Women kept their hair
covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and
bugs) and wore wigs. *Wealthy men could afford good wigs mad
e from wool. *They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them
they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell,
and bake it for 30 minutes The heat would make the wig big
and fluffy, hence the term "big wig."
Today we often use the term "here comes the Big Wig"
because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

************************************************** ************
In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with
only one chair. *Commonly, a long wide board folded down from
the wall, and was used for dining. *The "head of the household"
always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the
floor Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be
invited to sit in this chair during a meal. *To sit i n the chair
meant you were important and in charge. *They called the one
sitting in the chair the "chair man." Today in business, we use
the expression or title "Chairman" or "Chairman of the Board."

************************************************** ************
Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. *As a result,
many women and men had developed acne scars by
adulthood. *The women would spread bee's wax over their
facial skin to smooth out their complexions. *When they were
speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another
woman's face she was told, "mind your own bee's wax." Should
the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term "crack a
smile" In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax
would melt . *. *. *therefore, the expression "losing face."

************************************************** ************
Ladies wore corsets, which would lace up in the front.
A proper and dignified woman, as in "straight laced". *. *. *wore
a tightly tied lace.

************************************************** ************
Common entertainment included playing cards. *However, there
was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only
applicable to the "Ace of Spades." To avoid paying the tax,
people would purchase 51 cards instead.
Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were
thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't "playing
with a full deck."

************************************************** ************
Early politicians required feedback f rom the public to
determine what the people considered important. *Since there
were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their
assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars. *They were told to
"go sip some ale"
and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. *
Many assistants were dispatched at different times. *"You go
sip here" and "You go sip there." The two words "go sip" were
eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and,
thus we have the term "gossip."

************************************************** ************
At local taverns, pubs, and bars, people drank from pint and
quart-sized containers. *A bar maid's job was to keep an eye on
the customers and keep the drinks coming. *She had to pay
close attention and remember who was drinking in "pints" and
who was drinking in "quarts," hence the term "minding your "P's
and Q's "

************************************************** ************
One more: bet you didn't know this!
In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters
carried iron cannons. *Those cannons fired round iron cannon
balls. *It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon.
However, how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? *
The best storage method devised was a square-based pyramid
with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine, which
rested on sixteen. *Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be
stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. *There was
only one problem...how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding
or rolling from under the othe rs. *The solution was a metal
plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations.
However, if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would
quickly rust to it. *The solution to the rusting problem was to
make "Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass
contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.
Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the
brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron
cannonballs would come right off the monkey. *Thus, it was
quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass
monkey." (All this time, you thought that was an improper
expression, didn't you.)
